Planning to travel across France from England by car?
France is a popular destination for the English, with its many famous and lesser-known tourist areas such as Verdon, Lubéron, Provence and of course the French Riviera: Nice, the bay of angels, Saint Raphael, and all the delightful traditional towns of Provence. And don’t forget the mountains and especially the Alps, which are as beautiful in summer as they are in winter with their many ski resorts such as Val d’Isere, Courchevel, La Plagne and Les Arcs. France has so many places to visit that it is not for nothing that it is ranked among the best tourist destinations. But when you cross France by car, it is better to take it in stages so that you arrive in good shape and perhaps discover other regions. Because of its location, Lyon is a city it is almost impossible to avoid. The infamous Fourvière tunnel is, fortunately, a distant memory, and today a beautiful ring road motorway called Rocade Est bypasses the city and makes travel much easier.
Breaking your journey with a stopover in our hotel affords you the chance to find pleasant rooms, a charming hotel where you will feel great, and delicious French cuisine. Our private parking is secured at night to ensure your peace of mind.
Crossing the Channel.
A Channel crossing brings you to France by ferry or through the Eurotunnel. Travelling this way takes time, but it does mean you can bring your vehicle. Several companies offer crossings to France from the ports of Portsmouth, Dover, Folkestone, Newhaven, Poole or Plymouth.
With the Eurotunnel, it is possible to cross the Channel by car in about thirty minutes. Departure is from Folkestone and arrival is at Calais. The ferry takes longer but, more people travel that way. Make sure you know about boarding times in both cases.
Going skiing in the Alps.
To reach the Alps as quickly as possible it is better to pass close to Lyon, where you have access to the main motorways. To avoid traffic congestion, we recommend you to make a stopover in our Tante Yvonne hotel north of Lyon. You could, of course, stay a little longer if you wish and enjoy the pleasures of Lyon, Villefranche sur Saône and Beaujolais by taking, and why not, a short break in our hotel. Then the Rocade Est will take you on to the ski resorts refreshed and relaxed. With their many ski resorts, the Alps are the ideal place to enjoy the winter. On your own, with friends or with family, many activities offer you the opportunity to make the most of the mountain air, the beautiful landscape and the snow.
Summer, and the French Riviera.
Do you plan to head down to the Côte d’Azur with its unique Mediterranean coast, picturesque villages, blue lagoon coastline and its mountain and forest hinterland? If you are travelling towards Marseille, Nice, Toulon and the typical villages of Saint Tropez or Saint Raphael, making a stop north of Lyon is also a good way of avoiding traffic jams and enjoying the best possible journey. Once there, you also need to think about returning. Here is a way to make the most of your stay: set off back to England at the last minute, very late at night, and break your journey at our hotel north of Lyon. Then leave the next day when you are ready and enjoy a smooth onward trip without losing a day of your holiday.
